Giving back has been a core element of our culture since our founding more than 40 years ago. We've built on that commitment over time, leveraging our resources, time and skills to drive change.
Today, our approach to giving is guided by our vision to improve the health and wellbeing of all patients, and create a future of science that is more diverse, inclusive and equitable.
We want to help create sustainable career pathways into the life sciences for students of color, address the root causes of disparities in our healthcare system and build more vibrant communities in the places where we live and work. These efforts enrich our longstanding commitment to positively impact science, patients and people.
We’re proud to be one of the top corporate philanthropists in the Bay Area for 13 consecutive years, and we continue to learn from our experiences to drive measurable impact for our communities. In 2019, we gave more than $85 million in charitable contributions to causes aligned with our vision, as well as through the generosity and volunteerism of our employees and programs like Futurelab and The Resilience Effect that are driving real and lasting change in our communities.
We’re also addressing systemic inequities in our society through partnerships with a wide range of organizations that focus on the issues facing our communities, from inequities in health and education to racial injustice.

Genentech’s approach to giving during the COVID-19 crisis has been guided by three principles: Embrace equity. Engage employees. Think long-term.
